Band Saw Speed questions

Postby Cinchy on Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:17 am

I bought an old Wallace band saw off craigs list this weekend. It only has 2 pulleys that are on the outside of machine & will be easy to change. Right now the motor has a 3 inch pulley & the machines operating pulley is a 8 inch. It has an extra 2 inch pulley for the motor,& while I have not tried it yet, will installing it slow the machine more? If I have time tomorrow I`m gonna give it a try, as I think the speed is just a little too fast with the 3 in? In case the speed is not what I want, is there some supplier I can buy just pulleys from, & what sizes should I try? I have thought multi grooved pulleys, but dont want them to stick out to far on the machine?

I think if you put the smaller pully on the motor side it will speed it up....Great find i sure would like to find one like that.

MSC should be a good place to find pulleys or sheaves. I would stick with the V belt. They have also stepped sheaves so you can play around with different speeds. Also you may want to check out the Power Twist Plus V belts. They are adjustable and reduce vibration quiet a bit. If you can find a Machinery's Handbook you will find plenty of info about sheave diameters, RPM's and everything related.
