Making hangers !!!

Postby hackamore on Wed Jun 24, 2009 11:20 am

Ronny

I have seen 3-4 ways that people use to make hangers. The best system that I have seen is using a hydrolic press with a set of shaping dies. I don't have a hydrolic press so I use my vise, a shaping die and a big hammer. The resulting hangers are ok but not perfect. I like perfect! If I ever get 'perfect' I will let you know.
I was at Matt Weatons shop (Fort Gibson, Oklahoma) not long ago and he showed me a hanger bending / shaping system that he invented. I hate to brag on this guy to much but the fact is... this deal works bretty good. Maybe Matt will jump in here and show you how this thing works. That would require some pictures and I don't know how to post pictures. How about it Matt?

Im using 16 ga. mild steel and stainless steel. Ive made some spurs out of 4130 but I have not been able to find 16 ga. 4130 in my area.

Ronny,
Look back through Ted Two Feathers posts. He had pictures of his jig and it sure looked like a good one.

After seeing Ted's jig a while back, I built one very similar to it- works really good.

You would be alot better off making the swingers out of mild steel. High carbon does not tolerate bending to and fro guite like 1018 does. I will get pics up asap.

Here it is, but the pics look like they don't work anymore. Atleast not on my computer.

Ive been maken spurs again for year now mostly bullriding spurs but Ive workn more now on workn cowboy spurs also. Ive been to an engraviving school and with the people I meet there and finding a site like this makes it a bit easyer. Make me feel like I just can get better and not disscourage.
