As Norm requested, here’s briefly how I solder on my overlays. This is the same process I use for doing overlays onto silver as well (buckles,jewelery, etc)
All my overlays are done with silver solder. The only place I use soft solder is for filling the backside of buttons and spots to keep them from getting crushed.

Mr. Brooks, thanks for taking the time to post the information. Could you take a guess and tell us how many buckle your company makes in a year? The best part of exacting the skills of tinning the overlay is that there is NO cleanup of solder.

Haraga-1500+ handmade buckles per year -saddle silver and jewelry on top of that. We do a few spurs at the shop as well, but mostly i do them and bits myself in the evenings and weekends(more of a hobby!)

Norm- couple things I didn't mention before-
Most all times I've helped someone out that's having trouble soldering or just starting out(solder won't flow or flows all over,oxides forming on the silver,etc.) is due to using too much heat and/or not enough flux! If your piece is properly fluxed and you don't get things too hot, you can keep it hot for a long time with out major problems. Too hot would be the most common problem I've seen.
