Spur Rust

Postby BulletBob on Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:55 pm

I only have built a few sets of spurs (nothing like what ya'll post here those are amazing) just plain with some overlay. When I apply the liquid blue some times it discolors the silver, Do I need to use a different product? Also they start getting surface rust the same day as I blued them. I would also like to try some browning but I am unable to locate any locally can someone give me a supplier?
Thanks Bob

Try Brownells, I use their browning. It is easy to apply and turns out great.

Bob,
There are a number of ways to get blueing or browning off your mountings. 4/0 steel wool, pink pearl eraser, Sunshine cloth, fine silicone wheel, buffing wheel, ect. Start experimenting and see what works best for you. After you cold blue your spurs and get them cleaned up try rubbing some oil on them and leaving them overnight. I have been using either 3 in 1 oil or baby oil. I don't think it matters what kind. I also do this after I brown a piece. I bet this will help you out. Good luck.

"Pink pearl eraser? Sunshine cloth" ? Can you tell me more about these products? I use a polishing cloth by Pioneer Co. that they call Shino. Is this the same as your Sunshine Cloth. I have never heard of Pink Pearl Eraser!

A pink pearl eraser is that big pink eraser you use to erase pencil marks with. Its like the eraser on a pencil but bigger.
